For A Bright Future Foundation Announces 2022 Healthcare Scholarship Winners and Doubles Winners for Year 2 of Program

“For A Bright Future was born out of my own experience of growing up as a member of a disadvantaged and underrepresented group. Access to reliable health care and higher education are two key factors in overcoming the rates slightly higher poverty and incarceration rates in disadvantaged communities. I’m so inspired by this year’s incredibly accomplished recipients and their desire to pursue careers in healthcare and give back to their communities. value of healthcare workers to the community has never been clearer and I’m so glad these exceptional young people are willing to help,” said Louis Hernandez Jr.Founder and Chairman of the Board, For A Bright Future Foundation.

“Access to appropriate health care and education are just two of the fundamental pillars of a healthy and productive education that disadvantaged and underrepresented children often lack. Reading the nominations For A Bright Future received for the Healthcare scholarship was awesome. Everyone had such compelling stories. Congratulations to Jaden, Alondra, Kindersley and Victory! I am confident that all their hard work will eventually pay off and they will be able to bring remarkable contribution to their community,” said Dr. daniel diverFellowship Committee Member, For A Bright Future Foundation, and Former Chief of Cardiology and Director of Cardiovascular Service Line, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center at Hartford, Connecticut.

Jaden Smith graduated from Churchland High School in Virginia and continued his studies at Howard University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in surgery. His long-term career goal of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon was formed through the many extracurricular activities and STEM-related programs he joined in high school; most notably, his experience as a student observer at Norfolk Sentara Hospital, where he received mentorship from a Cardiac Perfusionist and Cardiothoracic Surgeon. As a STEM specialist, Smith believes he can take initiative and drive meaningful change to strengthen health initiatives for the community.

“My goal in pursuing a career in STEM is to help increase diversity, creativity and innovation in STEM while simultaneously improving national statistics,” said Jaden Smith.

Alondra Santos Cruz currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Pediatrics at the University of Southern California. As the first person in her family to go to college, she is determined to meet all the challenges she faces on the road to becoming a pediatrician and helping people in her community. His deep conviction that health care should be affordable and accessible to all is his greatest motivation. She devoted her time to learning as much as possible to become a doctor by participating in different courses and programs to further her knowledge.

“For me, being a pediatrician means having a real passion to help heal and save future generations. I hope to be part of a medical movement that finds solutions to end discrimination based on wealth and provide affordable health care for all,” says Alondra Santos Cruz.

Kindersley Machame will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Residential Care Facilities at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Nursing this fall. Machame was active in multiple extracurricular activities in high school. She participated in the CAMP Children’s Hospital LA program to better understand different healthcare careers and learn the basics like CPR, wound care, first aid, etc. She also volunteered at Kaiser Permanente, where she was able to maximize her role using her bilingual skills. Her goal of one day becoming a health care worker who can devote herself to saving lives and maintaining the health of her community is her main source of motivation.

“I will use my education to provide resources for my community. Eventually, I plan to give back to my community by creating opportunities for other students through internships, scholarships, or simply by sharing my own story,” says Kindersley Machame.

Victory Ladipo is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Neurology at the University Georgia Institute of Technology. His fascination with biology began at an early age and as he grew up he realized that this passion could go hand in hand with his desire to be involved in the community. At the height of the pandemic, Ladipo saw how the situation had impacted his community and he quickly seized the initiative. He started a chapter of the organization at his school and started a food drive to help alleviate the food crisis in his community. Ladipo dreams of becoming a researcher who works with global humanitarian organizations in the future to raise awareness of neurological diseases and increase access to affordable treatments.

“In college and beyond, I hope to continue using my voice to help my community, from volunteering to activism,” says Victory Ladipo.
