Friday Harbor student receives Congress and Bundestag youth exchange scholarship

Presented by ASSE.

ASSE International is pleased to announce that Sheya Welty, a high school student from Friday Harbor, is one of 250 American high school girls from across the United States to be awarded the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship for the 2022 academic year – 2023. Scholarship students will travel from August 2022 to June 2023. CBYX is a bilateral exchange program co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the German Bundestag (Parliament).

Since 1983, the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag have funded the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Exchange Scholarship Program to help prepare ambitious young people for a global future. The CBYX program has enabled more than 27,000 students to broaden their global outlook and make new friends. CBYX students are young ambassadors of the United States, sharing their life and culture with their German hosts and developing a better understanding of the United States and its diversity.

As a CBYX Scholar, Sheya will experience German life first-hand by living with a host family and attending a German high school. During the program, if conditions permit, students will also have the opportunity to meet representatives of the US Congress and members of the German Bundestag. Sheya will learn more than she ever imagined about another country and its culture, about the world and its diversity, and about herself.

Each year, as a partner of the U.S. Department of State, ASSE International awards the fully-funded CBYX scholarship to 50 high-achieving high school students from 10 states, enabling young people from a wide range of communities to participate in a cultural immersion experience complete.

When Sheya leaves for Germany in the summer of 2022, a group of German CBYX scholarship students will also arrive to live with American host families while attending high school in the United States. Students and families interested in receiving more information about hosting a German winner of a German Congress and Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship should call 1-800-333-3802 or visit the website from ASSE at or become an ASSE host family
