Heels aim to end the slide against freedom

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina hosts Liberty in the second of two meetings this season after falling in Game 1 in Lynchburg, Va., on March 8, 1-0.

Wednesday’s game will air on ACC Network Extra at 4 p.m.

In the first meeting of the season, Aaron Anderson hit a solo home run in the first inning for the game’s only run. Carolina pitchers limited the Flames to four hits and allowed only one hit over the last six innings. UNC racked up nine hits with Angel Zarate and Tomas Frick collecting two each.

The Diamond Heels lead the all-time series 23-6 but have lost three straight to the Flames. Carolina’s last victory over Liberty was a 16-1 victory at the 2019 Chapel Hill Regional. UNC and Liberty have split the last 10 meetings, with the Heels winning five of seven games at Boshamer Stadium while falling in each of three games on the road.

  • Junior shortstop Danny Seretti is one of the Diamond Heels’ best hitters. He hit safely in 14 straight games, batting .381 (21×55) with two home runs and 12 RBIs during his streak. He currently ranks second on the team in batting average (.338), slugging percentage (.538), on-base percentage (.425), runs scored (34), hits (54) and doubles (11) .
  • Second-year designated hitter Alberto Osuna has led in a run in nine of the last 11 games. He has 17 RBIs overall in those 11 games after collecting 17 RBIs through the first 29 games of the season.
  • After seeing his back-to-back games reach the base streak stopped at 50 on April 3, Angel Zarate has reached base in each of the last nine games, collecting a hit in each of those games. Since the start of the 2020 season, Zarate has reached base safely in 102 of 106 games played. He’s hit safely in 36 of 40 games this season with a team-high 20 multi-hit games.
  • Second year Hunter Stokely is in the middle of an eight-game career hitting streak, going 13-for-31 (.491) with home runs, four doubles and seven RBIs.
  • Second year MacHorvath had multiple hits in each of the last two games with four multi-hit plays in the last seven contests. He has increased his batting average by 47 runs since the schedule switch in April.


  • The Diamond Heels have hit 22 homers in 15 games, including 12 of the last 13, during the month of April. Alberto Osuna and MacHorvath have each hit six home runs this month.
  • Carolina has 60 more hits this month, including 35 doubles. Horvath leads with 14 extra hits (8 doubles, 6 home runs) and Osuna has nine (6 home runs, 3 doubles).


  • Junior Danny Seretti is a double shy to become the 10th player in school history with 50 career two-base hits. He has nine doubles so far this season after collecting 18 in 2019 and again in 2021.
  • Serretti has started 164 consecutive games, including 131 at shortstop.
  • Serretti ranks 26th among all active NCAA DI players in doubles and third among ACC players; Boston College’s Rafe Chaumette has 53 career doubles and Pittsburgh’s Jeff Wehler has 50. Liberty’s Aaron Anderson is the leader with 68.
