Horticultural Society Names Scholarship Winners – Hometown Focus

REGIONAL – The 2022 8th District Minnesota State Horticultural Society (MSHS) scholarship recipients have been selected. Recipients and their scholarships include:

• Emma Ambrosi, East High School,
Duluth. Emma received the $600
Sharon Wildung Memorial Scholarship
and plans to enroll in the University
o Minnesota Twin Cities, specializing in
conservation biology towards a career
as a conservation entomologist.
• Paul Lindgren, Saginaw. Paul was
received the $500 Dale Hurst Memorial Scholarship (Duluth Garden Flower
Society) and will attend the University
of Minnesota Duluth, with plans for a
career as a financial advisor.
• Sofie Anderson, Chisholm. Sophia
received the $500 Chisholm/Hibbing Garden Club Scholarship and
attend Hibbing Community College to
an associate degree in art. She plans
to transfer to Lake Superior Community College in the Radiology Technology program.
• Maezie McBride, Grand Rapids.

Maezie is a recent graduate of
Grand Rapids High School and was
won the $500 Grand Rapids
Gardening Club Scholarship. She plans to
attend Concordia College in Wisconsin to study interior design and
• Rachel Schoon, International Falls.
Rachel received the $500 Itasca
Country master gardeners / 8th arrondissement
MSHS scholarship and plans to attend Central Lakes College in Brainerd
for the Horticulture program.
• Bethany Cotten, cook. Bethany
received one of the $500 from the 8th District
MSHS Scholarships and Plans to Attend College of St. Scholastica in
Duluth for the psychology and sociology program.
• Kevin Heikkila, Aurora. Kevin was
received an 8th District MSHS of $500
Scholarship and will attend Minnesota North College-Vermilion in Ely,
with University transfer plans
of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for the
wildlife ecology and management

• Carly George, Gilbert. Carly received a $500 MSHS scholarship from the 8th District and will attend North Dakota State University in Fargo, majoring in biotechnology and crop and weed science.

The 8th District plans to offer scholarships in 2023 if funds are available. Applications and information should be available in early January 2023. Contact Jan at [email protected]

Scholarships include graduating as a senior in Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, North or South St. Louis counties, and planning to attend college or technical school in one calendar year. There are no restrictions as to course or school, or non-traditional student, student, second beneficiary. The beneficiary must provide evidence by essay of an interest or participation in horticultural/gardening activities. The deadline for applications will be March 15, 2023.
