How Lamar University Mechanical Engineering Students Learn to Be Career Ready

Ask Shiva Bairi what is the pursuit of a Master in Mechanical Engineering at Lamar University (LU) means, and tell you it was one of the best decisions of their lives.

With a particular interest in thermal systems and heat transfer, Bairi’s academic projects were complemented with comprehensive content and software systems that enabled a deeper understanding of their teachings.

“During my studies, I worked on several academic projects in the fields of design and heat transfer,” they explain. “In the advanced design of thermal systems, I was able to work on software tools under MATLAB. [These] helped me understand the connection between theoretical concepts and real engineering systems.

What sets LU engineering students like Bairi apart is their knowledge and interdisciplinary skills in design. It is a mark of approval that those with an interest in design should consider the degrees of Master of Mechanical Engineering (without thesis), Master of Engineering Science (with thesis) and Doctor of Engineering from the department of mechanical engineering.

“I teach students how to model fluid and heat transfer systems with simulations using OpenFORM and MATLAB,” says Ping He, assistant professor of mechanical engineering. “My students can model complex applied problems and set up computational experiments to aid in the design process. I teach the modeling process, from model construction to software implementation to model validation. My students report that employers are impressed with their understanding and ability to perform computational experiments in support of design. »

Besides coursework, there is an additional element of education involved: an ease in determining what is expected of the ever-changing engineering jobs landscape. “The interaction with industry personnel has helped me understand what companies expect from new graduates,” says Bairi. “At American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) meetings, I was able to get interview tips from other students who had successfully completed internships.”

Although preparing for a job can seem like a daunting ordeal, LU has a solid track record in helping its students master the skills needed to reach their dream careers. With a high return on investment resulting from the affordability of the university and the professional achievements of alumni, LU College of Engineering will get its graduates off to the rails – straight onto the path to career success.

Dhaval Desai, a UL graduate and current senior mechanical engineer, agrees wholeheartedly. “Today, top employers are going to ask graduating engineers complex technical questions and skills, so we need to be well prepared,” says Desai. “During my studies, I had two paid internships. The internships then helped me find a full-time position in the field of mechanical engineering. The courses and thesis research work I took during my graduate studies at LU helped me strengthen my CV and succeed in interviews.

Alternatively, those interested in design and management can opt for LUs Master in Engineering Management. This degree allows students to focus on either traditional engineering majors or interdisciplinary topics ranging from automation to mechanical design. All of this is highly dependent on each student’s study plans, which can be tailored to their professional goals and supported by faculty as well as individual electives.

While LU’s research-active faculty has also been accredited with distinct achievements, such as National Science Foundation Award of US$177,460 from Dr. Zhe Fan, the primary focus of the university has always been education. To reinforce this, students work in small groups, which allows for greater understanding of lessons, peer interaction, and more attention from advisors and faculty members.

“The LU Mechanical Engineering (ME) department is unique because of its focus on learning and implementing various design and analysis software such as Pro-Engineer, ANSYS, Pro Mechanica, Fluent and Gambit “, explains Desai.

However, LU’s commitment to helping its students achieve their goals does not end with the content of their department’s courses. To prepare them for the complex nature of design, students can take courses relevant to their interests offered beyond their department, so a mechanical engineering student can take an electrical engineering robotics course or a course computer science in artificial vision if he studied robotics.

Flexibility for students to chart their own path is facilitated by modernized college labs, systems, and resources, such as its Materials Characterization Center – all of which testify to the ability to meet the demands of today’s engineering landscape.

This is further supported by the Dean of Engineering, Dr. Brian Craig, who explains, “The faculty and I are fully committed to preparing our graduates[s] for digital transformation.

LU’s location in Beaumont, Texas is strategic because Beaumont is known to be a major chemical manufacturing center, with four refineries and numerous heavy industrial facilities in its vicinity. LU is also a low-cost university, supporting most of its graduate students through scholarships with tuition or in-state assistantships.

The combination of these factors is what ultimately contributes to the high success rates achieved by university engineering graduates – and it looks no different for Bairi and his peers.

Bairi has since accepted a paid internship in Los Angeles to focus on maintenance and reliability in all areas of refining operations, and is still receiving maintenance calls for cooperation opportunities in the fall semester as well.

“The materials science design and engineering courses at LU were helpful in answering technical questions during interviews,” they say. “I am grateful for all the teachers and resources provided in the mechanical engineering department that have helped me grow as an engineer.”
