No. 32 Jaron Smith wins, Terps falls to Michigan

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland Wrestling Team won a fight in a 40-2 loss to the No. 4 Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon inside the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The Terps earned a team point in the 197-pound fight for mat control.

No. 32 ranked 197 pounds Jaron Smith was behind in regulation against No. 6 Patrick Brucki, but the senior scored a late withdrawal to force an outright win. In the extra session, Smith exploded through his opponent, sending him to the mat for a decisive takedown, giving the Terps their only win of the day.

At 149 pounds Michael North relentlessly fought Pat Nolan. After dropping the first two takedowns of the fight, North rallied but would eventually go down due to Nolan’s lead time advantage.

No. 12 Kyle Cochran took on one of the toughest wrestlers in the world, No. 2 ranked 184-pounder and 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, Myles Amine. Cochran held off, but ultimately fell 6-2.

Several Terps also participated in the Mat-Town Open, hosted by Lock Haven University, on Saturday afternoon. Freshmen in red shirts Ethen Miller and Jaxon Smith both won home titles while Jackson Cockrel and Jordan Gabriel finished fourth on the podium.
