Northern NJ Community Foundation awards scholarship to aspiring artist to study animation and fine art

The Frank DeLorenzo Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation (NNJCF) has awarded Pilar Carranza, a graduate of the Leonia High School Class of 2022 in Leonia, New Jersey, her fourth annual scholarship. This fall, Carranza plans to attend the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles and study animation and fine art.

The NNJCF Donor Advised Fund honors Leonia High School classmate Frank DeLorenzo of 1964. A $2,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates talent and ambition as a artist, musician or writer, to continue their studies.

In high school, Carranza was active in several arts organizations. She has joined the Vox Angelica/Treble Choir, Chamber Choir, Bergen County Choir and New Jersey All-State Treble Choir. In addition, Carranza has assumed leadership positions as President of VXA from 2021 to 2022 and Secretary of the Upper Senate Committee of Leonia High School. She also helped other students by participating as a peer leader and joined the National honor society.

This budding artist pursued her creative interests by participating in the Limelighters, Project Greenlight, LMAC Fine Arts, and the Science Academy Mural Committee. Carranza was also an artist and organizer of Chalktivism, a student-run organization. Among her volunteer activities in the community, she was involved with the Leonia Vaccine Clinic in 2021. For four years, she helped with the Closter Animal Welfare Society.

“The fund’s namesake, Frank DeLorenzo, was a good friend, growing up in Leonia in the 1950s and early 1960s, and he was an inspiration to all who knew him. Singer, author -composer, artist, actor, comedian: Frankie could host any room, any band, anytime, anywhere. Establishing the Frank DeLorenzo Memorial Scholarship Fund was my way of to keep alive the memory and the spirit of an exceptionally gifted human being.

“This NNJCF fund helps students like this year’s recipient, Pilar Carranza, get the training they need to pursue a career in the arts,” said Paul Coopersmith, a classmate of DeLorenzo and creator and advisor of the Fund.
