Oshiomhole critics are ignorant – Nigerian Observer

Why would Edo PDP blame Governor Adams Oshiomhole for the 150 undergraduate university programs in public and private universities in Nigeria that are not accredited? According to the 2016 Accreditation Status Report of the National Universities Commission (NUC), non-accredited courses are domiciled in 37 of the 143 universities in the country.

Why would Edo PDP blame Governor Oshiomhole for the withdrawal by the Nigerian National Universities Commission of the accreditation status of certain university departments in several universities? The move prompted universities including Ambrose Alli University, Abuja University and others to consider measures that would avoid them further sanctions from the government regulatory agency. The National Universities Commission, or NUC, recently issued a notice “Programs Denied Accreditation Status in the Nigerian University System”. In total, 37 universities were affected at different levels.

Edo PDP ignores that accreditation, according to the laws creating the NUC, is a process by which academic programs are evaluated every five years. The evaluation criteria include the number of academics with doctoral degrees and the infrastructure to accommodate the undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The NUC Accreditation Team also establishes the number of students eligible for admission per program.

Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State under Governor Adams Oshiomhole graduated its first group of medical laboratory scientists after 27 years of existence. The graduates, 416, were made up of 137 chemical pathologists, 126 hematologists, 121 medical microbiologists and 32 histopathologists. In addition, the number of programs has increased from around 15 in 2008 to 28 in 2013 and they have all been accredited. The truth is, the AAU offered more college programs under Oshiomhole than any other governor in Edo State. As part of the PDP in Edo State, AAU medical students used to complete their program at the University of Benin. Oshiomhole prevented AAU medical students from going to UNIBEN to complete their program.

Those who criticize Governor Oshiomhole for the accreditation of courses and the neglect of Ambrose Alli University have been ignorant. It is equally important to note that the negligence issue raised was by mischief. Oshiomhole purchased and installed teaching and research equipment for the College of Medicine and others. The monthly school allowance increased from less than 100 million Naira in 2008 to over 255 million Naira in 2016.

Oshiomhole has worked tirelessly to ensure that the National Universities Commission, NUC, and professional bodies accredit the College of Medicine since 2008. Oshiomhole attended the successful swearing-in / swearing-in ceremony of the Sixth and Seventh Groups of qualified doctors from 2010/2011. and academic sessions 2011/2012. The governor ensured the recognition of Ambrose Alli University College of Medicine by the Medical Board of California, USA. It was under the administration of Oshiomhole that the College of Medicine obtained full accreditation from NUC.

So rather for Edo PDP to show appreciation for what the governor did to raise the school, people bring political and ethnic overtones to it. So PDP concocted the commentary in an attempt to incite the people of Esan against the governor.

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, has been highly regarded for its development of standard infrastructure and academic excellence. The Director of the Center for Research on Justice for Central and West Africa, Mr. Mike Smith, spoke about the inauguration of the projects by Governor Adams Oshiomhole in 2015 at the school. Mr Smith commended the Governor and former Vice-Chancellor Prof Cordelia Agbebaku, management and staff for ensuring that the mission and vision for the establishment of the school is supported, outlining their efforts as worthy of being imitated by others. He added that with the school’s impressive standard, students are always expected to make a remarkable difference at all levels.

When Comrade Governor took time from his busy state duties, to inaugurate projects at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, which were fully funded by the State government of ‘Edo. This was clear evidence not only of his passion for good governance, raising the level of education in Edo State, but it also indicated his love for Ambrose Alli University and his concern for the development of its infrastructure. However, Edo PDP said they were TETFUND projects.

The eight projects inaugurated were the five hundred million naira projects (NOT500,000,000) special grant that Comrade Governor graciously approved for the University at the inauguration of the current Ambrose Alli University Board of Trustees on 5e August 2013. The last installment of the special grant was received by the University in February 2014 and the funds were used to carry out the following capital projects.

Construction of a workshop building for the building department and a workshop for the fine and applied arts department of the faculty of environmental studies. Location: Main campus.

Construction of a 2 in 1 laboratory block for the medical laboratory science department. Location: Faculty of Medicine.

Development of a 2-in-1 laboratory block for the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. Place College of Medicine.

Construction of the library building of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. Location: Faculty of Medicine.

Construction of 500 capacity amphitheatres at the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. Location: Faculty of Medicine.

Completion of the Abandon Moot Court Building at the Faculty of Law. Location: Main campus.

Development of the building of the fictitious court of the Faculty of Law. Location: Main campus.

Construction of a departmental building for the agricultural economy department. Location: Annex Emaudo. The significance of some of the projects inaugurated is that Oshiomhole did his best for the school. Besides, The Edo State government headed by Governor Adams Oshiomhole carried out the following projects at Ambrose Alli University: 1. Construction of a 500-capacity amphitheater on the main campus, 2. Construction of a building of offices for lecturers on the main campus, 3. Construction of a 500 capacity amphitheater at Emaudo Annex, 4. Repair of the roof of the central library building on the main campus, 5. 500 KVA generator, 6. 2 Comrade Luxurious Bus (42 seats) and rehabilitation of Provost Lodge, Ogbeha Quarters and other numerous projects.

Former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Agbebaku attracted the following TETFUND projects: The TETFUND projects that Prof. Cordelia Agbebaku attracted are: Science building complex on the permanent site, 3. Purchase and supply of 969 volumes of books in 26 areas at the central library of the University, 4. Purchase of a brand new Toyota roof (STD) No. Medical facilities equipped with bus ambulances at the University Health Center, 5. Purchase of 35 grades of equipment from electronic library at the library of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, 6. Purchase of 100KVA / 1104C44TA922 at the central library of the University, 7. Purchase of teaching and research equipment for the departments of the College of Medicine, Department of architecture and IT. The other TETFUND projects are: 1. Fitting out of the 1000-seat amphitheater with modern theater seats, including ceiling rehabilitation and painting on the main campus, 2. Purchase and installation of facilities of language laboratory at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, 8. Acquisition and installation of furniture and equipment for the Department of Political Science, 9. Acquisition and installation of furniture, fittings and equipment for the faculty of law, 10. Acquisition of various laboratory works Installations Equipment for water supply and emergency generators, 11. Construction and furnishing of the office building and conference rooms of the Faculty of Arts.

Apart from the fact that Comrade Governor had increased their monthly grant by over 150%, he had also given them what I will call rescue funds, or infrastructure funds which were applied very wisely and cautiously by the AAU leadership and board of directors to deliver infrastructure development to the overwhelming majority of students at this institution. “Needless to say, over the past 6-7 years we were able to build 4 different 500 capacity amphitheatres apart from the one generously donated by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, that would make 5. We also completed one. project which was abandoned in 1992, which is the fictitious court of the Faculty of Law. This was completed in 2015, the government of Edo State built 15 professors’ offices for professors and this involves, besides the professors’ offices, you have the secretariat and other support staff offices, we built 2 laboratories in basic medical sciences. it also built the department of fine and applied arts. It also built the agricultural extension science department, brand new and if you go to the Emaudo campus you will also see another departmental building and an amphitheater with 500 lecturers.
“So apart from the other programs that he had started, the comrade governor during the last visit to commission some of these projects also promised the university another grant of 600 million naira which is linked to infrastructure because, according to him, if they were able to improve the infrastructure of the institution by very cautiously using the grant that had been given to them before, then he was now forcing him to do more and he decided to give a 600 million grant to the institution.

I want to tell the PDP to keep telling the people of Edo what they have done to the collective heritage of Edo State in terms of resource management, in terms of infrastructure development and what have you done because the Oshiomhole over the past 7 and a half years have been able to put into the field what people can see, what people can feel and a community of our existence has been further enhanced by the quality of the infrastructure that we were able to build.
