Tangela Cheatham joins CMU administration

MONT PLEASANT, Mich. Amy FolanAssociate Vice President/Director of Athletics for the Zyzelewski Family of Central Michigan University, today announced the hiring of Tangela Cheatham as CMU Athletics’ next Assistant Athletic Director for Administration and Senior Administrator, at from July 12.

“Tangela is a Michigan native and brings her experience of outstanding athletic programs across the country to CMU and I am thrilled to welcome her to the CMU Chippewas family,” Folan said. “She will be instrumental in advancing our program while playing a key role in helping our student-athletes reach their full potential.”

Cheatham will serve as a member of the department’s leadership team and oversee all facets of CMU’s comprehensive student-athlete and institutional support services. These areas include admissions, compliance, financial aid, academic programs, student-athlete development, and overseeing internal operations and administrative functions.

As a senior female administrator — a designation created by the NCAA in 1981 — Cheatham will be responsible for promoting meaningful representation of women in college sports leadership and management at CMU.

Cheatham joins CMU from the United States Military Academy at West Point, where she has served as the Assistant Director of Athletic Administration since 2021. Prior to her time at West Point, she held administrative positions at the West Virginia University, overseeing student-athlete enhancement and inclusive excellence. . She was also a career specialist and academic coordinator at the University of Iowa Department of Athletics.

Cheatham, a native of Detroit, Michigan, holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in higher education from the University of Oklahoma. She interned with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and, as a student, gained track and field experience at both OU and UM.
